Teachers Institutes
The Freedom Center offers opportunities for educators to learn more about variety of topics related to Freedom Center content and to receive graduate credit toward licensure renewal through its Teacher Institutes. Up to three institutes are presented each year on a wide range of topics. Previous speakers and topics include:
- Underground Railroad
- Civil War
- Gullah culture
- Dr. David Blight of the Gilder Lehrman Institute at Yale
- Dr. Sherman Jackson of Miami University
- Dr. Prince Brown of Northern Kentucky University
- Dr. Richard Dozier of Florida A&M University
- Paul LaRue, Master Teacher of Washington Court House High School
The Education Department at the Freedom Center will present its second of two teachers' institutes on Without Sanctuary. The institute will be Saturday, March 13, from 8:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. The keynote speaker for the institute will be Dr. Claude Clegg, professor of history at Indiana University. The purpose of the institute is to prepare teachers to prepare their students to tour the Without Sanctuary exhibition. Teacher Thursday Workshops
Using Technology in the Social Studies Classroom - February 18, 2010 from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. One and half hour mini-institute for educators to learn innovative ideas on how to use technology in the social studies classroom. This workshop will feature creating a digital backpack classroom, using digital media with Safari Montage and iTunes Beyond Campus and other ideas to immerse students and teachers in a media-rich, technology driven, global classroom.
Using Art, Architecture and Artifacts in the Social Studies Classroom - March 18, 2010 from 4:30 - 6:00 p.m. One and half hour mini-institue for educators to learn innovative ideas on how to use art in the social studies classroom. More information to come.
